  • Black Country Living Museum trip for Year 6 19th September 2023

Thu 21 Sep 2023 Shona Inman

On Tuesday 19th September 2023, Year 6 visited the Black Country Living Museum in Birmingham. The museum is a recreation of a Victorian mining town so the children were immersed in what life was like at the time and learnt about how the invention of the steam engine changed the landscape.  The children spoke to shop keepers about their goods, some were stopped by a policeman doing his rounds, they rode on an old-fashioned bus and visited the sweet shop!

A highlight of the day was the visit to the mine.  The children wore helmets and went beneath the ground into the mine and were taught about the type of jobs the different people did and learnt about the dangers that were involved.  They were shocked that a ten-year-old would have to work in the mine from 6:00am to 6:00pm!!

Another highlight was the visit to the school room where the teacher showed the children what it was like for a child at the time and how the cane was a regular occurrence.  Mrs Inman got the cane as she forgot her two shillings to pay for school that day!!

It was a wonderful day and the children learnt so much to bring back to school to apply to their history learning.

Well done to the children for all the fantastic outfits they wore (well done to the adults too) and for their enthusiasm throughout the day and thank you to the parents/carers who assisted us on the trip.

    Mrs Inman
