  • Regional Finals Girls’ Football

Fri 27 Jan 2023 Mrs Beal

    Regional Finals Girls’ Football

On Friday 27th January, the H.I.B.P.S. Year 6 girls’ football team travelled to St Ives to compete in the EFSA U11 County Cup Finals.

The matches ran throughout the morning with the children participating in three pool games and then a semi-final.  In the first match against Somersham, Erin scored two goals and Carys scored one, giving the team a robust start to the tournament with a 3-0 victory. This performance was swiftly followed with a game against Kings School, where Livia and Carys both scored to secure the team a 2-0 triumph. The final pool match was against St. Andrews; this time, Erin and Emily managed to get the ball over the line - leading to a 2-1 win. Rosie, as goalkeeper, made some historic saves to ensure the team made it through as winners of Pool 1.

In the semi final match against Westfield School, the team battled strongly but were overcome by a lucky goal from Westfield. However, the team did not capitulate and continued to battle with an exceptional piece of linking play which nearly secured them the goal of the tournament. Despite appearing to be the stronger team on the day, they could not manage to get the ball over the line.

Mr Fallon and Mrs Beal were very proud of all the girls, who took up each of their respective roles with a determination and zeal which no one could fault. Despite their disappointment to not reach the final, the girls secured a magnificent 3rd place and represented H.I.B.P.S. extremely well.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents who travelled to St. Ives to support the girls in their football development.

  • Year 4 Maths Challenge

Thu 26 Jan 2023 Shona Inman

On Thursday 26th January, four children from Year 4 attended a Maths Challenge at Saint Faith’s School in Cambridge.  The event ran throughout the afternoon and consisted of numerous Maths tasks that were completed in pairs.  Solving triangular tangrams was one of the rounds and this was particularly challenging.  Other included, quick addition, missing numbers, finding pairs and numerous other problem-solving style tasks.

It was a fantastic event with the children challenged throughout.  The way our children worked together was fantastic as they were supportive and encouraging of each other and worked quickly and systematically.  Although we didn’t place in the top three teams, the children should be so proud of themselves as they certainly did our school proud.

Well done all and thank you to the parents who helped with transport and supported at the event.

  • New Age Kurling Event

Wed 25 Jan 2023 Shona Inman

On Wednesday 25th January, a group of Year 5 and Year 6 children travelled to Bassingbourn Village College to take part in a New Age Kurling competition.

The event ran throughout the afternoon with the children participating in four different games.

The first was ‘Traditional Kurling’ where you had to get your stones as close to the centre of the target as you could.  The second was ‘Skittles’ where you had to knock over as many skittles as possible from different distances away.  The third was called ‘Through the Gate’ and this involved the children having to push their stones through the gap which got smaller as the game progressed.  The last was ‘Target’ where children had to aim at a stone and hit it out of the centre of the target.

The children worked in two teams of four and were so encouraging and supportive of each other which was lovely to see.  The children were excellent at the games and improved so much as the afternoon progressed.

Well done to all the children who took part.

  • Award Winning Folk Band play at the Brook School!

Sun 22 Jan 2023 Mr Newman

On Friday 20th January we we delighted to welcome folk duo Megson into school. All of the children were fortunate on Friday to have the opportunity to listen and join in at one of two concerts in the school hall. Megson have been nominated four times for the prestigious Radio 2 folk awards.

Not only did Stu and Debs entertain the children with a mixture of their own songs, traditional folk ballads and tales, they also talked about the different instruments they played. There was the opportunity for the children to ask questions and several ‘singalongs’ which all the children enjoyed immensely. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to listen to such amazing music and singing. Lots of the children have requested more, so links to Megson’s website, Youtube channel and Spotify pages are below for you to look at with them. A huge thank you to Stu and Debs for coming into school to share their music with us.

  • Penathlon Event

Fri 20 Jan 2023 Becca Thompson

On Friday 20th January 2023, 6 children from Years 4 and 5 took part in the Panathlon Multi Skills event. The children participated in a carousel of inclusive activities including boccia blast, new age kurling, basketball, parachute popcorn, precision beanbag and skittles. At each activity children had the opportunity to gain points for their school. Histon and Impington Brook Primary School came in second place overall and were only 1 and ½ points off the top spot. The children had a fantastic afternoon and enjoyed representing our school while staying active. Well done again to all the children that took part.

  • New Age Kurling Competition

    Intra House Kurling Competition

During the week of January 16th 2023, all classes have been using the New Age Kurling equipment to take part in an intra house competition.  Children pushed the stones towards a target to see who could get closest to the centre and points were earned for this as well as for participation.

The children enjoyed taking part and all felt they improved with their aim as they progressed.

Thank you to The School Sports Partnership for the loan of the equipment and thank you to all the children and teachers for being so enthusiastic about the event.

  • Intra School Cross Country Competition

HIBPS Intra School Cross Country Competition

    Friday 13th January 2023

On Friday, the whole school competed in year group teams in a cross-country competition to earn House Points for their respective Houses. On site at the school, Mr Fallon and Mr Gilbert set out a fantastic course around the whole school grounds to ensure that the children had a safe and clear route to follow.

It was clear on the day, due to the fantastic performances of the children, that Mr Fallon had prepared the children well for the event through their ongoing P.E. lessons. In addition, the teachers support of the children’s running development through their Golden 5 active breaks throughout each week, had further ensured that all were able to take part.

You may be interested to know that your children, so far this academic year, have run over 4,000km (around 2,500miles), which is a staggering amount.

Each race was hotly contested but there was a particularly tight sprint battle between Eban and Derek in the Year 5 boys’ event. In the Year 1 boys’ event, Leo, who finished in silver medal position, did so with only one shoe for most of the way. Thankfully, the errant shoe was retrieved from the thieving mud after the race finished!

The children on the day supported each other brilliantly, cheering and encouraging other children to accomplish their best and helping children to reach new heights and enable all to feel like they had achieved something positive from the experience.

Teaching staff were brilliant: they also ran the course, helping all children to achieve. Mr Newman even led the groups around the course throughout the day and there was even a sprint finish between him and Mr Staplehurst!

Well done to all the children and congratulations to the medal winners below.

  • County Cross Country Championships

Sun 08 Jan 2023 Jonathan Newman

On Sunday 8th January I had the pleasure or taking a group of 11  runners from the school to the Cambridgeshire Cross Country Championships held at Priory Park, St Neots. This was the first time the school has taken children to this event and we were competing against children from large athletic clubs including the nationally renowned Cambridge and Coleridge, Hunts AC and March AC. All of the children performed brilliantly both individually and as teams.  It was a joy to see how much both the girls and boys teams cheered on each other.

The boys race took place first with Derek, James and Eban all up with the leading pack right from the start. Coming down the hill and into the the last 300m it was anyone's race. James produced a fantastic sprint finish to end up with the silver medal, closely followed by Derek in 3rd. Benji was never far behind and finished an excellent 8th. Robert ran well to finish in 22nd.

Special mention to Eban, as our only Year 5 representative in the race. He looked as if he might get a medal with less than 200m to go but had to pull up within sight of the finish. He literally had given everything but still managed to gather himself to walk to the end and finish 21st. I am sure he will medal next year! We heard shortly after the finish that the boys had won team gold with a combined total of 14 points.

The girls under 11s race took place next and it was a very quick start, especially given it was uphill for the first 400m! The school were led home by Lucy who finished a fantastic 2nd and only three seconds behind the winner. Carys was a brilliant 4th overtaking someone just before the line and was closely followed by Amelie in 6th(she will be able to run again next year!). Millie was in 13th place and Freya in 14th. Both of them showed incredible determination. We won gold in the girls' team event with a combined score of 12 points.

All in all, an amazing achievement. Well done to all the children and a huge thank you to Mr Fallon and the parents and carers who came along to support.
